The Sherline 2.5" 4-Jaw Independent Chuck (1/2-20) offers significant advantages over traditional 3-jaw chucks, making it an essential tool for precision machining tasks. This chuck is particularly adept at holding irregularly shaped parts, allowing for precise centering and the ability to hold parts off-center when necessary. Its design ensures a tighter grip on stock, which is invaluable when machining components such as cams and crankshafts.
One of the notable features of this chuck is its reversible jaws, which can accommodate larger stock, enhancing its versatility. Unlike scroll chucks, this independent chuck does not have Tommy bar holes, as it is typically operated using a 5/32″ hex wrench. This chuck can clamp both externally and internally, similar to the 3-jaw chucks, but it is considered to add more versatility to a machine, making it a preferred choice for those seeking to expand their machining capabilities.
The chuck is compatible with various spindle threads, including those used on Sherline and other lathes, such as old Unimat and Sears 6″ lathes. This adaptability makes it a versatile addition to any workshop. Additionally, the chuck features a clamping groove, allowing it to securely hold parts for milling operations.
Note: Exercise caution when setting the jaws individually, as this can add considerable setup time.
