The Sherline 13/64" (.2031) WW Collet offers a precise and efficient method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe, ensuring high centering accuracy. This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. A drawbar threads into the collet's backside, drawing it into the adapter, which causes the jaws to close and securely grip the part to be machined. This system is renowned for its accuracy, accommodating a small range of diameters with a tolerance of approximately ±.001″ (.02mm).
WW collets, distinct from milling collets, feature a hole that runs entirely through both the collet and drawbar. The maximum diameter stock that can pass through the collet is 3/16″ or 4.5mm. Collets larger than this diameter are referred to as "pot" chucks and are not bored through, being only .260″ deep. The collet's maximum runout is .002″ or less, and when the WW collet adapter is properly trued, it ensures optimal performance.
Sherline collets are logically numbered, with inch collets beginning with part number 1160 followed by two digits indicating the size in 64ths of an inch. The collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications, with a shank diameter of .312-.313 and a .275-40 thread. They are not hardened and are specifically designed to fit Sherline's drawbar and adapter. It is advisable to verify compatibility with other manufacturers' WW collets before purchase.
